My Romanian is extremely basic, so I will use English. I have some questions concerning line between Sighetu Mamartiei and Valea Viseului. Couldn;t find the answers on my own...

Does anyone know when did line Saratel-Bistritza-Vatra Dornei ceased to be the "main" line, in favour of Saratel-Beclean-Salva-Vatra Dornei?

What was the cause of this?

Also, when/why was the line destroyed or dismantled?

The oldest map that I know of, that shows this line intact is Soviet Strategic map 1 : 2 500 000 dated 1944. I don't know if the map was accurate and up to date.

Also, is there anywhere on the web a database of Romanian railways (dates of construction or modernization, like it was made for Polish railways:

Hello, I will try to answer your questions.
During the first world war the Austrian troops have built a 1435mm gauge railway between Tiha Birgaului and Dornisoara (34km, between December 1914 and August 1915). I'm not sure if this stretch of line was connected directly to the previously built ones. It had very sharp turns (some only 20m radius) and steep gradients (max 87mm/m); for the first 26,8 km it doubled the existing road between Bistrita and Vatra Dornei.
The vehicles traveling this railroad were special, having petrol-electric traction. At the front there was a "locomotive" - a generator car running on petrol followed by the carriages that had electric traction motors on their axels. That is why they called this line "Benzinelektrobahn" or "Kraftwagenbahn".
After the first world war the line was taken over by CFR and used until 23 June 1939. It was not suited to "regular" transport, had little traffic and was prone to accidents. Moreover, by the 18th of December 1938 CFR had already completed the last strech of the Saratel-Beclean-Salva-Vatra Dornei line so the Benzinelektrobahn was closed. Foarte frumos, multumim! Cladirile garilor vad ca sint in stare relativ buna, uzate numai de trecerea timpului. Nu se vede urma niciunei actiuni rauvoitoare, ceea ce ma face sa apreciez calitatea oamenilor din zona si sa presupun ca lipsesc anumite natiuni conlocuitoare discriminate.

Cam lipsesc porumbeii de Copsa Mica. Cand am fost ultima oara de la Ludus la Bistrita, n-am vazut un tigan in tren...

Karpaty, cum se mai circula pe linie, aproximativ cu cat? Lume era prin tren?

Sectia Ludus-Bistrita se circula binisor cam 50-60 , calatori au fost multi , toate locurile ocupate si 2-3 in picioare unde am fost intr-o zi de Duminica deci fara elevi si oameni sa mearga la munca , acum 2 ani am fost in cursul saptamanii si trenul a fost plin plin , deci nu te puteai misca .

Sectia Bistrita-Bistrita Bargaului se merge cu 40-50 , calatori la dus au fost cam 15 iar la intors sa zic undeva pe la 30-40 .
